“Vasfije Courage Award” – Established in 2019, this annual award honors individuals or organizations / institutions that have demonstrated extraordinary courage, commitment and leadership in advancing the cause of survivors of sexual violence from the war time in Kosovo, bringing tangible changes in the improvement of their life, as well as economic, social and cultural integration of this vulnerable social category.
This year, on the occasion of the 21st Anniversary of its establishment, the Kosova Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims honored Ms. Kadire Tahiraj with the “Vasfije Courage Award.” The award is handed by Ms. Shyrete Tahiri Sulimani, who was also the first person honored with this award (2019).
Kadire Tahiraj – in 2013 founded the Center for the Promotion of Women’s Rights, where she is currently Executive Director. Ms. Tahiraj is one of the well-known women’s rights activists in the Drenas region, one of the most war affected area in Kosovo.
Since 2009, she has been committed to supporting, protecting and promoting the rights of survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. Then, in 2013, she established the Center for the Promotion of Women’s Rights (CPWR) in Drenas. This organization aims to improve women’s rights in all aspects, with special emphasis on advocating for the rights of women who have experienced wartime trauma and torture, providing direct treatment and rehabilitation, social welfare, security, advocacy for gender equality and economic empowerment.
CPWR’s activities related to the identification of victims of wartime sexual violence are extend to other municipalities such as Skenderaj and Klina. In recent years, Ms. Tahiraj through various projects was engaged in the economic empowerment of women from Drenas.
Furthermore, in 2017 the FIDES Award for Women’s Empowerment was awarded to Ms. Kadire Tahiraj for her excellent contribution to the promotion of women’s rights and economic empowerment.
